Famous for its chili 'catch', Talisker 10 from the Isle of Skye is said to be 'made by the sea' - a suitable analogy. Its mineral, phenolic nose reminds of fresh, salty seawater with iodine and seaweed. A light sweetness of citrus fruits combines with restrained peatiness. The arrival is strong with a rich note of malted barley and dried fruits, leaving a peppery chili burn on the palate. A real 'afterburner' that finishes pleasantly warming, intense and peppery. The only downside is the intense addition of caramel (E150a), to create a rather unnatural, amber-glowing color.

Nosing:
Full fresh peat smoke (smoky not medicinal). A marine saltiness and savoury component which I'd most liken to fish sauce. Malty buiscuity note like digestive biscuits.
Taste:
Full bodied, sweet arrival. Upfront smokiness gives way to caramel, dried fruit and citrus peel. Lots going on and a very well judged bottling strength.
Finish:
Medium to long in length, more residual dried fruit and maltiness. Some background black pepper.
Comment:
Going over my old reviews I was surprised to see I hadn't done a Talisker yet. This one is definitely worth a try for anyone, and if I was recommending an Islay malt for a first timer this would probably be it. The smokiness is well integrated and not overpowering. There's plenty going on in the palate as well, and the finish is good also. All around very solid. If I was nitpicking I would say it maybe lacks a little character here and there, but mostly that comes down to personal preference; this is really very good stuff. This is especially true when you consider the price, affordable and available.
