Comment: Old Pulteney 18-year old lives up to its reputation as a distinct whisky. The sherry barrel maturation is evident but is not overwhelming. This quality allows the maritime salt and seaweed influences to shine on the nose. Every time one thinks that sweet scents have begun to dominate, a tinge of sea air calmly reasserts itself.
A hint of oak emerges on the palate. An echo of the sea influences by way of salted caramel is prominent in this whisky's flavor profile, and so the pleasantly bitter oak provides a complementary layer of complexity.
The Old Pulteney 18-year old's finish presents herbal elements (thyme, rosemary) that linger on the back of the tongue. Salted, toasted nuts play a minor role as well. Breathing out through one's nose while focusing on the aftertaste reveals a well-earned coffee-with-cream note. But be careful to savor it while it lasts, as this whisky's finish is relatively short-lived given the overall complexity of this offering.
