Dailuaine 16 Years

This Malt matured in selected, dry Sherry casks. Even though the aroma is dry, the taste is mild and smooth and the finish is long-lasting. Those who think of Sherry as too sweet can be surprised by this different one. Within the Flora & Fauna series, the producer is bottling selected casks from few distilleries. The Flora & Fauna series is a real enrichment for the Whisky community and is viewed by collectors as original bottling, as long as there is no other.

Showcasing some of the lesser-known distilleries in the Diageo portfolio, Flora & Fauna gives you access to whiskies that usually go into blends. Dailuaine 16 is a Speysider with a singular style. Both intriguing and complex, the aroma features earthy sherry notes, plums and oranges, enriched by cocoa, dates and hints of rose water. Cherries, mint and emerging wood spices form the palate, supplemented by strawberries, herbal bitterness and a whisper of peat smoke in the lasting finish. This malt is definitely one of the best F&F expressions left today.

Nosing: Süße Getrocknete Früchte Zimt
Sweet and approachable. Dried apricot and candied ginger. Cinnamon spiciness. Very fruitcakey.

Taste: Süße Früchte Eiche Gewürze
Sweet arrival, fruity with sweet spices and sweet wood notes. Transitions to slightly tart, but not bitter towards the tail end.

Finish: Gewürze Süße Walnuss
Long and sweet, sweet spices, transitions to walnut.

Comment:
I got a sampler of this on a whim, and its something I might come back to in a full bottle to spend more time on. The whole experience is quite sweet, so if that isn't your thing then this isn't for you. There's enough spiciness to balance things out though, and the transitions are very nicely defined and interesting. The palate really changes as you hold it in your mouth and becomes almost sour. Some people have said they find smoke in this release, but there wasn't a hint of it in what I tasted. Very enjoyable.
