Differences between Original Bottlings and Independent Bottlings
Differences between Original Bottlings and Independent Bottlings Half of the experiment was carried out with original bottlings (OB), the other half with independent bottlings (IB). For years there has been a trend towards IBs. Many independent bottlers put a lot of emphasis on non chill filtra

Scotch - Bottling
Bottling Only Glenfiddich, Springbank and Bruichladdich have their own bottling plants. All other distilleries ship their casks to the big bottlers in Glasgow, Edinburgh or Perth. Usually between 30,000 and 60,000 bottles of the standard single malt whiskies are bot
The History of the Independent Bottlers
The History of the Independent Bottlers Single malt whisky is old. Not only on the label but historically speaking. In 1995 its 500 th birthday was celebrated. Before that time, only a few monasteries knew about the production of malt whisky. Outside these ‘strongholds of knowledge’, its pro

different rates for same whisky
@SlàinteMhath @kroman @Mateusz_Kopacz @to_e_or_not_to_e I think this all depends on how many resources Horst, Ben, and crew are willing to devote to this project. If they do go to the trouble to clean up the database, I think the biggest help in keeping it that way would be to eliminate the abil
Single Malt Scotch
@thommes You are correct. Independent bottlers buy whisky from a producer, bottle it, and bring it to market; normally, but not always, the distillery name will be disclosed. The better independent bottlers usually buy new-make spirit from a distillery, have it filled into their own casks, and age i
Why Lowlands single malt are expensive?
@DaFin I've tried a couple of the Auchentoshan, I have a bottle of a Cadenhead Auch 17 single cask on my shelf now...so, my wife is a Irish whiskey enthusiast so I've had the opportunity to sample quite a few, I find the only thing they have in common is the triple distillation process, the flavor p
New Member From California
Welcome to the Forum!Seems like you have some nice bottles there, that's the upside of most of the US not allowing to mail alcohol - you find those old gems. I was lucky myself, when I spent the summer in the US and found 78 and 79 vintage Macallan 18yo for the price of the 95 vintage.Looking forwar
What is your favorite single malt of all time?
@SlàinteMhathfantastic choice, I have gazed at that one lovingly at the local whisky shop...Caol Ila is a big favorite of mine, I often go for the Gordon and Macphail and Cadenhead bottlings...if if price is no object, the Laphroiag 32 is high in my list to try and has Horst ever tried Macallan M?@M
Independent bottlers
Hunter Laing is quite new and a Douglas Laing 'split-off'. The old DL (and their casks) were split into two seperate companies. Hence, the quality of the malts should be identical. Most DL (and HL) bottlings I have encountered so far were pretty decent, similiar to Gordon & MacPhail and Cadenhead
Top 25 year drams...
@kroman greetings, the big question is what is your budget, then from there, Bourbon or Sherry cask, and there are not a lot of official bottlings at 25 year worth the big bucks, before you drop the coin, you should at least give a consideration to the wonderful independent bottlings from Gordon &am
Lismore
@foxbarry1 Lismore produces Speyside whisky bottlings, rather than list the source like a Gordon and Macphail or Signatory would do, the actual distilleries are a mystery and are sold under the Lismore banner more or less, they put out a super cheap bottling less than $20 USD...the 21 sounds ve

@SlàinteMhathI missed you reply as I were in italy enjoying sun and wine :)Some questions as I am thinking of taking that tour later on this year in September. How long were each distillery visit? @Ian_Biluck Vasco lists the definitive core "official bottlings", also check out Caol Ila 12 and Port Charlotte 10 for a slightly different smokiness then the Port Ellen distillery cluster in the south of Islay...Bunnahaiban and Kilhoman also produce some quality smoky whisky...some independent
Whisky from 1968 - around 200 Euros
You can't of course buy a bottle from his year of birth. Well, it's not entirely impossible. I didn't find a 1968 vintage but there are options for 1967, if you neglect the 200 Euro limit. There even is some logic in choosing a 1967 vintage, as life technically begins 9 months before we were born. I
