The Macallan Quest Collection: Tracking the casks

The new series replaces the Macallan 1824 Collection

Okay, granted, this is no brand-new information: the Macallan 1824 Collection (Travel Release) is to be replaced by the Macallan Quest Collection. This news was spread in autumn 2017 and the Quest Collection was announced to be launched beginning of 2018. And already at that time details about the four prefigured single malts were given. Did you know that those bottlings of The Macallan Quest Collection already were released?

With this new series The Macallan Quest Collection the distillery wants to take the whiskyfans on a voyage through the world of the Macallan casks. Wood is in the focus of these four single malts without age statement.

The four releases of The Macallan Quest Collection

Macallan Quest was the first one of the series to be presented. Quest was released to represent the 20.000 miles voyage undertaken to look for new possibilities of cask maturation. Therefore the whisky for the Quest was batched from four different types of casks: Sherry seasoned casks from American and European oak, ex-Bourbon casks und hogsheads. Quest is bottled with 40% ABV. It shows a well balanced aromatic profile of citrus fruits, vanilla and oak.

In Macallan Lumina the old and the new world meet according to Macallan. European and American oak, seasoned with Sherry, and hogsheads are used. Lumina presents 41.3% ABV. Macallan Terra is matured completely in first fill Sherry casks – “seasoned” ones as Macallan calls those Sherry casks that had been filled with Sherry for a while before they where used to mature the Macallan whisky

Macallan Terra is dedicated to whisky maturation in casks of two Spanish cooper families of Jerez de la Frontera: Tevasa and Vasyma. The alcoholic strength is 43.8% ABV.

Macallan Enigma is the fourth single malt of the Quest Collection and with its 44.9% ABV it is the strongest one. Spain is also the topic of this whisky: The seasoned first fill Sherry butts in which the Enigma was matured were exclusively made by the Tevasa Cooperage. .
