A three-year partnership to protect the global marine ecosystem

The Talisker Distillery on Skye is situated right on the coast. Several other whisky are at coastal places, too, but hardly any of them use this maritime location as effectively as Talisker. “Made by the sea” is the distillery's slogan and anyone visiting the visitor center in Carbost, which was redesigned a few years ago, will be shown Talisker's connection with the sea in a very vivid way.

Talisker now wants to show this solidarity through a collaboration that was presented today in a press release: Over the next three years, Talisker will work in cooperation with the organization “Parley for the Oceans” to care for the restoration and preservation of the health of underwater forests in coastal areas.

Parley for the Oceans does not describe itself as a traditional environmental protection organization that wants to try to solve environmental problems on its own, but rather as a collaborative network. The aim is to raise awareness of the endangerment and pollution of the oceans and to encourage many people and companies to get involved creatively with projects and by implementing ideas on environmental protection and the promotion of sustainability. So far, the organization founded by the German Cyrill Gutsch has made a name for itself especially in fashion and art sectors, e.g. has worked with Stella McCartney and Adidas. More Infos on the organization and its projects can be found here on its website.

Combat coastal erosion and climate change, preserve marine life

Cyrill Gutsch says: “Witnessing the rapid decline of marine wildlife and the destabilization of the environment that provides the chemistry which allows us humans to exist, leads to a simple conclusion: We will not be able to live on a planet with a dead sea and collaborating with nature is the only way for us humans to survive. Therefore, we are excited to collaborate with Talisker, a true ocean brand. Together we will explore, research and protect underwater forests which give shelter to sea life, prevent erosion of coastlines and help us to fight climate change by capturing carbon emissions. For the Oceans, Climate and Life.”

Talisker wants to put a special focus on the protection of the kelp, which also makes an important contribution to the regulation of the pH, to sequestering carbon dioxide and to the provision of habitat and food for microorganisms and marine animals off the coast of Scotland.

Learn to understand maritime ecosystems better

Talisker will help Parley for Oceans work with local nonprofits internationally and provide grants for marine research and conservation. Innovative research in these areas is to be supported to better understand maritime ecosystems. In the case of commercial campaigns, for example in retail, funds and support for projects should be generated. For example, a fundraising campaign will be launched for the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, a well-known annual rowing competition over 3,000 miles.

With the collaboration between Talisker and Parley for the Oceans, Diageo is continuing its comprehensive sustainability program, explains the latest press release on the new partnership. According to Diageo's last annual report, a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 46% improvement in water efficiency have already been achieved.
