Soon available: MacNair's Lum Reek Peated Blended Malts

GlenAllachie introduces three new blended malts created by whisky legend Billy Walker

After the Speyside distillery GlenAllachie under the leadership of Billy Walker presented their single malt core range in summer (we reported), now a new blended malt series is introduced to the German market: MacNair's Lum Reek Peated Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. Billy Walker himself created these whiskies.

Long may your chimney smoke

"Lang my yer lum reek" is the saying of a Scottish proverb. Literally translated this means "long may your chimney smoke", and with it you wish someone a long, healthy and prosperous life. According to legend, 150 years ago the Victorian entrepreneur, globetrotter and distiller Harvey MacNair drank a dram in an old stone bothy near Glenallachie on an autumn evening. Due to a blocked chimney (or "lum") the room was filled with smoke, but this had a wonderful effect on his whisky in the glass and inspired MacNair.

Islay and Speyside whiskies

For the blended malts of the Lum Reek range, whose packaging shows Harvey MacNair, Billy Walker chose heavily peated Islay and Speyside malts, which were married with richer GlenAllachie whisky and then filled into specially selected casks. These then matured on site in the warehouses of the GlenAllachie distillery until they were blended by Billy Walker. For each of the three bottlings, a harmonious choice of casks was made. All blended malts are neither coloured nor chill-filtered and bottled at 46% abv and 48% abv, respectively.

Official tasting notes

The new range consists of three bottlings: a blended malt with 12 years, 21 years and without age statement.

MacNair's Lum Reek NAS, 46% abv

Matured in first-fill Bourbon, Oloroso sherry, virgin oak and red wine casks

Colour: Rich gold

Nose: Crisp peat notes with barley sugar and dark chocolate.

Palate: Full bodied peat reek, vanilla, barley sugar and tannins, followed by bog myrtle and sweet spices.


MacNair's Lum Reek 12 Years Old, 46% abv

Matured in first-fill Bourbon, Pedro Ximénez sherry and red wine casks.

Colour: Copper bronze

Nose: Sweet peat reek combining with butterscotch and mocha.

Palate: Lashings of rich peat reek with mature heather notes, bog myrtle, butterscotch, toffee and sweet spices.


MacNair's Lum Reek 21 Years Old, 48% abv

Matured in Oloroso sherry, Virgin Oak and red wine casks.

Colour: Butterscotch

Nose: Aristocratic peat smoke with dark chocolate and fudge.

Palate: Tobacco, leather, cedar wood and waves of peat reek with oodles of cocoa, vanilla, honey and spices.
