Octomore Dialogos 09.1 – 09.4 announced

The ninth edition of the heavily peated single malt from Islay is an invitation to enter into dialogue

Bruichladdich has revealed details about the coming 9th edition of its Octomore. Dialogos is the name of the new series of four single malts. Dialogos (or διάλογος as it is written in Greek letters on the bottle) because the distillery wants to encourage whisky fans to discuss about resources, the wood that is used for maturation, the influence of climate and terroir and other criteria that help to form the character of the whisky.

To follow the previous concept of transparency there are detailed information given regarding the Octomore Dialogos 09.1–09.4. Those who love the Octomore because of its intense smoky aroma will probably be curious to hear (read…) the ppm figure: They were reduced compared to those of last year and range from 133 to 167 ppm – what is indeed still “heavily peated”.

The new Dialogos will be launched between September 2018 and January 2019.

Octomore Dialogos 09.1 – The Control

"The older, the better“ is a myth according to the Head Distiller of Bruichladdich, quoted in information about the new Octomore. He chose a five-year-old Whisky for this bottling, produced from 100% Scottish barley, matured in 100% first fill ex-Bourbon casks.

  • 100 % Scottish Concerto barley, harvested in 2011
  • 156 ppm
  • distilled in 2012
  • 100 % matured in 1st fill casks of American oak (Ex-Jim-Beam 51 %, Ex-Jack-Daniels 26 %, Ex-Clermont 15 %, Ex-Old-Grand-Dad 8 %)
  • 100 % matured on Islay
  • 5 years old
  • bottled with 59.1 % ABV
  • non-chill filtered and uncolored
  • limited to 42. 000 bottles worldwide
  • available from September 2018

Octomore Dialogos 09.2 – The Independent Variable

Just one criterion was changed compared to the 9.1: the whisky spent its 5th year in ex-Bordeaux red wine casks

  • 100 % Scottish Concerto barley, harvested in 2011
  • 156 ppm
  • distilled in 2012
  • matured for 4 years in ex-American whiskey casks, then for 1 more year in 2nd fill red wine casks from Bordeaux
  • 100 % matured on Islay
  • 5 years old
  • bottled with 58.2% ABV
  • non-chill filtered and uncolored
  • limited to 12.000 bottles worldwide
  • available from mid-September 2018

Octomore 09.3 – Naturalistic Observation

The third one is a whisky from 100% Islay barley as it is usual in the Octomore-series. 52 tons of malted barley resulted in 134 casks, most of them second fill casks (American and European oak) to give room to the own character of the spirit.

  • One farm, one field, one vintage
  • 100 % Islay barley from Octomore Farm, type Concerto, harvested in 2011
  • 133 ppm
  • distilled in 2012
  • fully matured in ex-American whiskey and French wine casks (1st-fill-ex-American 25 %, 3rd-fill-virgin-oak 25 %, 2nd-fill-ex-Rivesaltes 20 %, 2nd-fill-ex-Syrah 20 %, 2nd-fill-ex-Bourbon 10 %)
  • 100 % matured on Islay
  • 5 years old
  • bottled with 62.9% ABV
  • non-chill filtered and uncolored
  • limited to 18.000 bottles worldwide
  • available from mid-October

Octomore 09.4 – The Outlier

The other three Dialogos bottlings were distilled in 2012 and matured for five years, but the age of the fourth edition varies: the whisky was distilled in 2008 and it stayed in casks for ten years. And different from the 09.1-09.3 which are based on Concerto barley the Octomore 09.4 was produced from Optic barley and some of the casks it was matured in were Port and Cognac casks

  • 100 % Scottish Optic barley, harvested in 2007
  • 167 ppm
  • distilled in 2008
  • fully matured in 1st-fill Port pipes 37 %, 1st-fill Cognac casks 31 %, 2nd-fill ex-American whiskey casks 20 %, 3 years in 1st-fill-ex-American casks + 2 years in Virgin oak + 6 years in ex-American whiskey casks 12 %
  • 100% matured on Islay
  • 10 years old
  • bottled with 56.8% ABV
  • non-chill filtered and uncolored
  • limited to 12.000 bottles worldwide
  • available from January 2019
