New: 25th Anniversary Edition of Balvenie DoubleWood 12
The Balvenie honours the 25th birthday of its legendary DoubleWood 12 with a limited anniversary edition in a special design
It is one of the most popular whiskies worldwide and was awarded Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky under 15 years at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2016: The Balvenie DoubleWood 12. First introduced to the market in 1993, this bottling has been an integral part of the product portfolio of the Dufftown-based distillery, belonging to the William Grant & Sons family group.
Malt Master David Stewart began experimenting with maturing whisky in two different wood species in succession as early as 1982, which was later referred to as "wood finishing". The whisky matured in this way was first bottled as The Balvenie Classic in 1983. Ten years later, on the occasion of the distillery’s centenary, DoubleWood aged 12 years was presented to the public for the first time.
To mark its 25th birthday, The Balvenie is now launching an anniversary expression in an attractive special design. This 25th Anniversary Edition contains the same whisky as the standard bottling, which is first matured for at least 12 years in traditional casks – American oak barrels and hogsheads – and then aged for an additional nine months in Spanish ex-Oloroso sherry casks. The whiskies from individual casks are then allowed to "marry" for another 3-4 months in large wooden vats, so-called "tuns".
The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 gains its distinctive character from maturing in two different wood types. Each stage gives different qualities to the resulting single malt: American oak casks provide mild and sweet vanilla notes, while European sherry casks bring depth and fullness of flavour.
