Michael Urquhart appointed president of the IWSC 2021

The International Wine & Spirit Competition chose former Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail as their president of organization in 2021

Michael Urquhart has been an established and recognized personality in the Scottish whisky industry for decades. In fourth generation, he was Managing Director of the family-owned company Gordon & MacPhail. The International Wine & Spirit Competition IWSC has now named him president for 2021.

Many decades in the service of Scotch whisky

The company of the Urquhart family is not only one of the most famous independent bottlers in Scotland but has also owned the Benromach Distillery since 1993. In 2014 Michael Urquhart retired as Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, in 2017 he also stepped down from the board and thus ended 36 years within the company. His services to the Scottish whisky industry have been reflected in many prestigious awards and honors, including his appointment as a Keeper of the Quaich in 1999 and Master of the Quaich in 2012.

As a president of the IWSC 2021, Michael Urquhart succeeds this year's president Tamara Roberts, CEO of the English wine producer Ridgeview. With Urquhart, since 2009, for the first time, a representative of a Scottish company has been at the forefront of the renowned international competition; at that year, the former CEO of Edrington, Sir Ian Good, was president of the IWSC.

“It’s a real privilege, and I’m humbled, to be chosen as president of such a prestigious organisation as the IWSC. I believe this is a reflection of Gordon & MacPhail’s standing in the drinks industry and I thank all those involved in our family business for their support and contribution to our success over the years”, Michael Urquhart said. “I’ve always had the greatest respect for the IWSC and the excellent work it does in maintaining and developing the high-quality reputation of the global wine and spirits industry. I’m very much looking forward to getting behind the IWSC and ensuring it continues to work in the best interests of the entire industry.”

IWSC founded in 1969

The International Wine & Spirit Competition IWSC has been existing since 1969 and annually honors outstanding people and products in the wine and spirits industry. The assessments of the numerous wines and spirits submitted are made by independent juries of distillers, producers, importers, dealers, consultants, sommeliers, specialist journalists and other experts.
