Launch of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal announced

The third edition of the series contains whisky of the lost Highland Distillery Glenury Royal

The third edition of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare series will be released in October 2019, as announced by Diageo. This limited Blue Label bottling is a blend of rare whiskies from active distilleries as well from lost ones. „Headliner“ of this edition created by Master Blender Dr. Jim Beveridge is the single malt of Glenury Royal.

A royal story

In 1825, "The Walking Captain" Robert Barclay, Laird of Ury, a member of the British Parliament and avid long-distance walker, founded the Glenury Distillery near Stonehaven at the east coast of Scotland. It was a beginning full of problem: Not long after the opening a fire destroyed the maltings, the kiln and the barley stock and a few weeks later, a worker died when he fell into the boiler. But Barclay rebuilt the destroyed parts of the distillery, went on building the brand and in 1835 he received the allowance from King William IV to add "Royal" to the name of his distillery an honour that only three distilleries in Scotland ever have been awarded. During the following decades, the distillery changed hands several times until it was finally closed in 1985 and the property was sold. Diageo still owns the brand and some remaining stock of Glenury Royal Single Malt Whisky.

Aromatic waves of vanilla, heather honey, fruits and chocolate

The Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal was blended by Dr. Jim Beveridge by selecting several extraordinary whiskies to join the Glenury Royal. Diageo writes: “Jim and his team also hand-selected two exceptionally rare whiskies from the "ghost" distilleries of Cambus and Pittyvaich, perfectly balancing their creamy toffee and butterscotch notes with the sumptuous orchard fruits, sweet apple and delicate apricot character of Glenury Royal. Five other rare whiskies from Glen Elgin, Inchgower, Glenlossie, Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie bring waves of vanilla, heather honey and dried fruits that weave through smooth dark chocolate and nutty layers to create an exploration of this irreplaceable 'ghost' whisky - making this limited edition our most indulgent yet.”

The Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal was bottled at 43.8% ABV. It will join the other two whiskies of the Ghost and Rare series: the first bottling with whisky from Brora and Pittyvaich and the second one containing whisky from Port Ellen.
