Julieann Fernandez is a winner of Icons of Whisky Scotland

The title Master Blender 2022 goes to the master blender of Distell International

The Icons of Whisky Scotland Awards are the regional Scottish leg of the Global Icons of Whisky, awarded by the renowned journal The Whisky Magazine. In December the winners of the Scottish Awards 2022 were announced at the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh. Julieann Fernandez was named Master Blender 2022. She is the master blender of Distell International and responsible for the portfolio of Bunnahabhain, Tobermory and Deanston as well the Blended Scotch Whisky Black Bottle.

From forensic science to whisky production

30-year-old Julieann Fernandez is one of the youngest personalities in the global whisky industry who has ever received a title at the Icons of Whisky Awards. Her studies in forensic science brought her into contact with the whisky industry - and for the first time with whisky - during an internship in a Chivas Brothers research laboratory.

After completing her studies, Julieann Fernandez worked at the Scotch Whisky Research Institute before starting to work at Chivas Brothers in a grain distillery in Glasgow and learning everything about the whisky process. When a position as a whisky blender was offered at Distell, she seized this opportunity. Three years later she was appointed master blender. That was at the end of 2019. Only two more years later, during which she was responsible for the release of 25 limited bottlings and two new core-range editions, she now was awarded the Icons of Whisky.

The next step for Julieann Fernandez will be to compete against the other winners of the regional awards at the Global Icons of Whisky Awards. The results will be announced in March 2022.
