Glenmorangie presents Private Edition No 9: Spìos

Fully matured in Ex-Rye Whiskey casks

Spìos is the Gaelic word for spice. This should probably be a very clear indication of the aromatic character we can expect. Another one is the information we get about the casks that were used to mature this single malt whisky: The Glenmorangie Spìce was fully matured in casks that held American Rye Whiskey before and were influenced and vaccinated by this spicy and rough spirit. After the casks had been emptied and brought to Scotland the Glenmorangie Spìce was matured in them. It spent abound 7 or 8 years in the casks so Glenmorangie’s Director of Distiilling, Whisky Creation and Whisky Stocks Dr. Bill Lumsden communicated at launch events.

We are used to these unusual casks experients by the Tain distillery and for the purposes of these Private Edition releases the Glenmorangie team always bottles Single Malt with unusual aromatic profiles. Last year the deep fruity Glenmorangie Bacalta was presented, finished in sun-kissed Madeira casks. The year before there was the creamy and sweet Glenmorangie Milsean that had been provided with a finish in heavily charred Portuguese red wine casks. So this year the Private Edition is less of a sweet and sunny character but more of a spicy and hearty one – if we can assume that the rye whiskey casks had a formative influence on the Glenmorangie spirit. Let’s look at the official tasting notes:

Glenmorangie Spìos, Private Edition No 9, 46,0 % ABV .

Nose: Glenmorangie Spios first entices with its fresh and herbal nose, hinting at cherry, clove and mint toffee, followed by scents of green grass. A splash of water releases more perfumed notes, both crisp and clean – and an inviting complexity of herbal tones.

Palate: Then, rye's characteristic spice burst forth, as taste of toffee, clove and cinnamon mingle with nutmeg and sweet, buttery vanilla.

Finish: The finish is rich, sweet and lingering, with toffee and Brazil nut emerging alongside a citrus tang.

The sale of Glenmorangie Spìce starts in the UK in these days and other European and international markets will follow. This Private Edition is a limited release of course as usual.
