Generations 80 Years: Gordon & MacPhail bottles the world's oldest single malt Scotch whisky

It's whisky from the Glenlivet Distillery

Never before has such an old single malt whisky been bottled: Gordon & MacPhail have announced the release of an 80-year-old Glenlivet in September. It will be part of the Generations Series.

On February 3, 1940, the cask with the number 340 was placed in Gordon & MacPhail's warehouse by George Urquhart and his father John where it waited for 8 decades for its big moment. On February 5th, 2020 it was decided that this moment has come and this Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch Whisky will be bottled. 44.9 % ABV alcohol are still left after all these years and the yield of the cask is 250 decanters.

"That this whisky - the oldest single malt Scotch ever bottled - remains so full of vibrant flavour with a strength of 44.9% ABV, is testimony to knowledge handed down over successive generations of my family," said Stephen Rankin, Director of Prestige at Gordon & MacPhail Whiskies, a fourth generation member of the family that owns the company, Gordon & MacPhail have been in the whisky business for more than 125 years and have been maturing their own casks in their warehouses.

Such a unique whisky deserves a unique decanter with unique packaging, Gordon & MacPhail decided. The internationally renowned architect and designer Sir David Adjaye OBE was won to design decanter and oak box fort he Ggenerations 80 Years. He says: "When collaborating, I am looking for like-minded partners in terms of their craft, beliefs and traditions. I loved Gordon & MacPhail's rigour and obsession with their products and their craft – a romantic commitment that enables one to do exceptional things. Our partnership felt so organic."

"Maturing a single malt Scotch over eight decades is an art," said Ewen Mackintosh, Managing Director at Gordon & MacPhail, "similar in many ways to architecture where you are creating something that needs to stand the test of time. Neither can be rushed. Both Sir David and Gordon & MacPhail share a commitment to invest in the future. We both see the significance of creating something exceptional; leaving a legacy for future generations."

The Generations 80 Years will be unveiled in September 2021. The current press release from Gordon & MacPhail does not reveal the price of the Generation 80 Years. The decanter with the number 1 will be auctioned by Sotheby’s in October. The proceeds will be donated to the Scottish charity Trees for Life, whose mission is to rewild the Caledonian forests.
