Floki Mead Cask: Icelandic Whisky with Mead Cask Finish

Viking honey wine kissed single malt

With its Double Wood Reserve editions, the Icelandic Eimverk Distillery presents single malt whisky, which was matured in different casks, with a varying cask selection from batch to batch. The first maturation usually takes place in casks that had previously held Floki Young Malt, the finishing casks differ: for the first edition, stout casks from an Icelandic brewery were chosen, last year two editions followed, an Oloroso Sherry Finish and a Birch Wood Finish.

With the Floki Mead Cask, Eimverk now presents a three-year Double Wood Reserve that was finished in a mead cask after having been matured (one cask pre-filled with smoky Sheep Dung Young Malt and one cask pre-filled with classic Floki Young Malt were used). The Floki Mead Cask was bottled at 45% ABV, uncolored and un-chillfiltred.

The aroma and taste is described as follows: “The mead cask gives the whisky a wonderful aroma: honey, various spices and the typical Floki aroma of fresh hay flow into the nose. The honey is as well striking on the tongue, an oily mouthfeel is accompanied by a strong flavor with toffee and some fruit. The finish is long, spicy honey that develops into fresh mocha.”

Since 2009, the Eimverk Distillery has been producing spirits from locally grown barley. In addition to the Floki Whisky, which is available as an un-smoky and a smoky variant, the VOR Gin and the VITI Aquavit are also internationally recognized.
