BrewDog hires ex-Johnnie Walker manager

Craft Brewery BrewDog introduces David Gates as new managing director for its LoneWolf Distillery

The independent Craft Brewery BrewDog has appointed David Gates as managing director of BrewDog Distilling. The former head of Diageo Futures and previously Johnnie Walker global brand director brings 27 years of industry experience to the burgeoning Aberdeenshire team.

David's appointment came at a time when BrewDog's distilling arm, LoneWolf, announced its plans to extend its spirit range beyond vodka and gin to encompass whisky and rum. David Gates, who left Diageo in early 2018 as managing director after 27 years, will make a significant contribution to reviving the art of producing spirits by developing new whisky and rum bottlings. "I couldn't miss the opportunity to shake up the spirits category with the industry's biggest disruptor. What BrewDog has achieved for the beer industry is more than impressive. It's the same creative flair and obsession for quality that I hope to bring to the spirits portfolio," says David.

Malt, Grain, Rye and Bourbon

Founded in 2007 by James Watt and Martin Dickie in Ellon, north of Aberdeen, Craft Brewery BrewDog opened its LoneWolf distillery nine years later at the same location. However, this is not just another distillery. LoneWolf is multi-faceted and will not be limited to a few spirits. In addition to malt whisky, there will also be grain whiskies, bourbon-style whiskey, vodka, gin and rum. LoneWolf is also one of the first Scottish distilleries in modern times to distil a rye whisky.
