Blackwater Distillery starts production of Irish Whiskey
Located in County Waterford, Blackwater Distillery becomes Ireland's 21st operational whiskey distillery
Ireland's first artisanal gin distillery has now started distilling Irish whiskey and will produce both single malt and pot still Irish whiskey. Situated on the banks of the Blackwater River, just outside Cappoquin in County Waterford, Blackwater Distillery becomes the 21st operational distillery in Ireland.
The site is considered to be the first whiskey distillery in the world featuring the so-called "blockchain technology". Each bottle of Blackwater whiskey will have a unique symbol that can be scanned to gain access to information from each step of the whiskey's production. This technology is developed by the Irish as part of the company's "100% transparent" objective. In early 2019, the distillery will offer guided tours to the general public.
The head of the Irish Whiskey Association, William Lavelle, said: "We are delighted that another distillery is starting to produce Irish whiskey and there are now 21 distilleries in operation. Over the coming months, we will see at least five more distilleries in operation." This is indeed a decisive turnaround since the beginning of the decade when there were only four operational Irish whiskey distilleries. The Irish whiskey renaissance is continuing and shows no signs of abating.
