Big Peat 8 Years Old A846: The Feis Ile 2020 Edition
The smoky blended malt honors the famous road on Islay
The whisky festival Feis Ile 2020 on the Hebridean Island of Islay is over and this year it was only celebrated online due to the Covid-19 virus like so many other events. Many whisky fans have sorely missed not driving along the A846 on Islay for their distillery tour this time. The Feis Ile 2020 release of the Big Peat is dedicated to that small island road. This edition of the very smoky blended malt is 8 years old.
The Big Peat 8 Years Old A846 will be available at selected spirit retailers from June 8, 2020, according to a press release from Douglas Laing & Co. And since only 500 bottles are sold worldwide, you’ll have to be quick to get your hands on one of them.
Longing for the Queen of the Hebrides
Cara Laing, Director of Whisky in the family business of Douglas Laing & Co, said: “Each year, we proudly donate to the Feis Ile charity, an organisation that works tirelessly to showcase Islay to the world. At a time when many of us are dreaming of one day making the journey back to the Queen of the Hebrides once more, a sip of Big Peat’s A846 Edition seeks to bring his much-loved island home to you, via its unmistakably “Islay” notes of chewed leather, streaky bacon, punchy peat smoke and rock salt.”
The Big Peat 8 Years A846 was batched from single malt whiskies from Islay distilleries and bottled at 46% ABV, uncolored and unchill-filtered. The bottle is delivered in an attractive gift box that allows a view on the bottle and its striking label: It shows the well-known Big Peat man on the Hebridean Island of Islay, right in front of a stylized road sign to the A846.
Producer’s tasting notes for the Big Peat 8 Years Old A846
Nose: Opens with puffs of peat, smoked ham and a fresh seaside-saltiness
Palate: A Big Peat hit closely followed by chewed leather, streaky bacon and rock salt
Finish: Satisfyingly long with notes of Madeira cake and more of that earlier smoked ham
