BenRiach presents 21-year-old Temporis peated single malt
With the release of Temporis 21 Years The BenRiach Distillery expands its award-winning peated standard range
Recently we informed about the BenRiach 10 Years Triple Distilled as a new travel retail exclusive bottling of Brown Forman’s Speyside distillery. Now the company has presented a single malt that is more than twice as old, traditionally distilled twice and also peaty as the newest member of its award-winning peated range: The BenRiach Temporis 21 Years Peated. This new standard bottling is now available to purchase worldwide from specialist retailers.
Four different casks
Temporis means "time" in Latin and is supposed to recreate the original character and flavour of Speyside malt whiskies in the nineteenth century. Temporis is made from peated malt and has been matured for 21 years in virgin oak casks, ex-Bourbon barrels as well as Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso Sherry casks. The BenRiach’s Master Blender Rachel Barrie created this new standard bottling from this mix of four different casks, and is bottled at 46 abv, neither coloured nor chill-filtered. "This four cask matured and peated combination produces a superbly balanced malt, retaining BenRiach’s signature sweet, fruit-laden style and peated tradition", says Barrie. On the nose, Temporis shows notes of pear and toasted spices fused with creamy honey and fine peat. On the palate, there are tropical pineapple and star anise, roasted orchard fruits with cinnamon and creamy peat flavours, lingering into a long, sweet and smoky finish.
Tradition in peat
Founded in 1887, closed three years later and reopened in 1965, the distillery has gone through several owners over the years, but has always kept up its tradition of making peated whiskies. The new owner Brown Forman (since 2016) is now benefiting from the fact that there are casks in their warehouses dating back to the 1970s. By that time most distilleries in Speyside focused on the distillation of unpeated malt, BenRiach was already producing smoky and peaty malts again and can now fall back on these old stocks.
The new Temporis complements the core range of peated whiskies from the distillery, including Birnie Moss, Curiositas 10-year-old and the oldest of this series – Authenticus 30-year-old. There are also limited releases available, such as Peated PX Finish 22-year-old, Peated Cask Strength or Peated Dark Rum Finish 22-year-old.
