Benriach Cask Strength Batch 1 is the first release of a series

The first cask strength bottling marks a new era for the Speyside distillery

Benriach Distillery has extended its portfolio of single malt whiskys tremendously during the last years and now the first bottling of a Benriach Cask Strength has been released. Others will follow so we can look forward to a whole series of Benriach Single Malt Whisky in cask strength.

When Billy Walker, Wayne Kieswetter and Geoff Bell acquired Benriach in 2004 it was full steam ahead then! The deal included a tremendous stock of old whisky casks and provided an opportunity for great releases. The independent Benriach Distillery Company started to create a variety of finishes as for example the Benriach Tawny Port 15 Years Old and presented unpeated as well as peated single malt whisky.

Benriach Cask Strength Batch 1 shows the classic character of the distillery

According to the official Announcement the first Batch of the Benriach Cask Strength is a whisky in a classic Benriach style. Fruits, sweet honey and spices show up. It can be assumed that a “classic style” will be oriented towards the standard release Benriach Heart of Speyside. But the aromas of the Benriach Cask Strength Batch 1 are embedded in 57.2 % ABV. There’s nothing told about the age of the casks that were batched for this cask strength release. They had been chosen by Master Blender Billy Walker and we publish his tasting notes with pleasure:

Colour: Gleaming harvest gold with a burnished copper edge.

Nose: Sweet toasted oak spices are interwoven with roasted orchard fruits and dusted with cracked barley. Black vanilla pods, desiccated coconut and a gentle floral note add complexity to the ripe, fruit-laden nose.

Palate: An excellent example of the delicious BenRiach character. Creamy heather honey pours over a medley of apples, pears and apricots. Subtle notes of candied peel and fresh ginger give a delicate warmth and lead to a classic combination of vanilla, toasted coconut and sweet barley in the luscious, velvety finish.
