Awards for Fred Laing and his Douglas Laing & Co company and two new bottlings

The independent bottler ends 2020 with good news

At the end of the year, the independent bottler Douglas Laing & Co. announces two special single malt whisky editions and is also pleased about two awards at the Spirits Business Awards 2020: Douglas Laing & Co. was named Bottler of the Year, while Chairman Fred Laing was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award.

A life for the water of life

Fred Laing entered the whisky business in 1966 at the age of 16 to learn from scratch. He accompanied his father Fred Douglas Laing, who founded the company, named after him, in 1948, on business trips for two years and then began an apprenticeship at Whyte and Mackay. Three more years of training at White Horse Distillers followed before Fred Laing joined the family business in 1972. Many well-known whisky series such as Old Malt Cask, Old Particular or the Remarkable Regional Malts beginning with the Big Peat were launched in the coming years. In 2013, Fred Laing and his daughter Cara took over the leadership of the company Douglas Laing & Co, which in 2017 proudly announced plans to build their own whisky distillery, the Clutha Distillery in Glasgow. In 2019, the Strathearn Distillery was integrated into the company.

Two releases of the XOP Black series announced

Douglas Laing & Co. presents two special bottlings in the XOP Black Single Cask series in a current press release: A 1989 Glenrothes from a sherry barrel, “black as Coca-Cola” and a 45-year-old Teaninich, distilled in 1975. When and in what countries the new releases will be available has not yet been communicated.

A year full of ups and downs

Fred Laing said: “2020 is certainly one we’ll remember for its Covid-related ups and downs. From a strictly business perspective, these recent awards and accolades coupled with some special bottlings are a very positive way to close off what has been an exciting year for the company. We have faced challenges but on the whole it has been a good year at Douglas Laing as we continue to see growth across our core brands, investment in increased capacity at Strathearn Distillery and significant progress with our Glasgow-based distillery, bottling and head office project. Now we look forward to 2021 and what that will bring.”
