Armorik Sherry Cask and new Armorik Dervenn added to Breton whisky portfolio
Warenghem Distillery releases core whisky with distinctive Sherry character
Besides many single cask releases and special limited editions the Warenghem Distillery offered two whiskys as permanent bottlings yet: One is the Armoric Classic from Bourbon Casks, the other is the Armorik Double Maturation that first spent time in casks from Breton oak before it was matured further on in refill Sherry casks. Now the Armorik Sherry Cask joint this permanent core range portfolio of the French distillery. It is batched from whisky that was finished for at least one year in ex-Oloroso sherry casks after its maturation in ex-Bourbon casks and from whisky matured only in first fill Oloroso sherry casks. These casks came from Bodega Jose y Miguel Martin.
The official tasting notes of Armorik Sherry Casks:
Nose: intense and elegant; voluminous because of the influence of Oloroso sherry; vanilla and citrus notes deliver freshness and a touch of mint
Palate: well balanced and round, caramel and more intensiv sherry
Armorik Dervenn with special local profile
Not as a member of the core range but as a limited edition the new Armorik Dervenn was released recently. This year’s batch is limied to only 2.000 bottles. The Dervenn underlines the local character of the Breton whisky: It was only matured in casks made by the last operating cooper of Brittany from fresh Breton oak and at an unusual big size of 400 litres. The number of those trees that are allowed to be felled in each year is strictly regulated. Breton oak grows much slower than American white oak from which Bourbon casks are made and their wood structure is very dense.
The official tasting notes of the Armorik Dervenn:
Nose: voluminous, balanced and complex with spicy aromas like leather and cloves, accompanied by fruity notes of peach and apricots
Palate: very voluminous on the palate, again spiciness, suede leather and liquorice, followed by a mouth filling fruity sweetness Geschmack: sehr üppig am Gaumen, wiederum Würzigkeit, Wildleder und Süßholz gefolgt von einer mundfüllenden fruchtigen Süße.
