In the review video of the Glenmorangie Bacalta, I believe I heard Ben says that most of the Madeira wines are made of the Malmsey grapes. But I read on Wikipedia that 85% of Madeira are made of Negra Mole red grapes and even amongst the white grapes the Malmsey is only one of 4 major varieties.

quoute from Wikipedia “Approximately 85% of Madeira is produced with the red grape, Negra Mole. The four major white grape varieties used for Madeira production are (from sweetest to driest) Malvasia, Bual, Verdelho and Sercial.”

Do I misunderstand what was said?

You are correct. About 85% is made from the Negra Mole (Tinta negra) grapes. But of those "noble" madiera wine grapes that you listed Malvasia (Malmsey) is the most common.
