Heirloom/heritage strains of Barley in whisky production?

    Hello to my distressingly distilled malt mates!
    With the rise in modifications to crops for higher yield, etc, the strains of plants that originated unintentionally due to geographic isolation are rapidly disappearing, along with the particular flavors and subtleties they inherently possess. Is there any hope that whisky producers might make special maltings of these landrace barlies as an experimental new c direction for the whisky world?
