This question is for Dr. Luening for possible inclusion in the next FAQ vlog:

Having tasted many different single malts and visited most of the distilleries in Scotland, do you feel that old-fashioned production methods have a noticeable effect on the flavor of a single malt? By old-fashioned production methods, I mean direct-fired stills, floor maltings, and worm tubs.

    Thank you for the question.

There had been a lot of change in the production of whisky. But the core production process stayed the same. Most of the changes were for the better. Only very few had a negative influence on the taste.

I will include it either in the next FAQs or send it out as a newsletter.

Kind regards, Horst Luening, Master Taster, Whisky.com
