Sip of water after taste gives new dimension

I find that taking a very small sip of water after tasting a whisky (and the mouth feel) makes the whisky come alive and produce a new 4th dimension. Is it just me or is this common practice and/or knowledge? I'm new to the serious whisky testing (not new to drinking it though!) trying to learn as much as possible!

I've heard someone mention before that they take a small sip of water while the scotch is still in their mouth. I've tried it, but had difficulty getting the right amount of water. I prefer diluting whisky in the glass because it's easier to get the right amount. The technique works better with higher ABV whisky that can take more dilution without killing the taste.
