Just wondering whether whisky in an unopened bottle change in any way over time? Does it get better, worse, or not change at all? If I want to buy a few bottles of scotch that I like to keep it for 5-15 years as a way of reducing risk of rising cost, will I also increase risk that my whisky will turn bad over that time?

It can only turn bad if during these years the cork will get gamaged. To avoid the cracks on the cork it is sometimes useful to store whisky bottles like wine bottles, horizontally. This way the cork doesn't go dry. However, wet condition damages the cork too, but much slower, so you can hope for safe preservation of the whisky for about 20-25 years.
