Springbank 12 100 Proof

Hey Everyone.... Here comes the new guy asking alot of dumb questions...

I'm new to Scotch, but not to Whisky. I have delved deep into the bourbon world the past couple years and I am looking for something a bit different !!!


anyway, I found this gem at a local liq.






There doesn't seem to be alot about this bottle. Anyone here able to shed some light on it.

You have a gem. This particular bottling of Springbank is HIGHLY, HIGHLY collectible. It originally sold for $50.00 a bottle and was released in a limited edition. I purchased three of these when they were released ~10 years ago, if my memory serves me right.

The unique quality about this bottling of 100 proof Springbank is not that it is 50% ABV, but that the ABV was achieved NOT by diluting down from cask strength with water, but was lowered by using Springbank whiskies from 12 to 25 years old. In Europe the Springbank 100 counterpart was released as SPRINGBANK 100 British Proof which is 57% ABV. Whereas %ABV in America is half of the Proof, the European proof is British Proof. British proof is calculated by multiplying the proof ( 100 ) by 4 and then dividing 400 by 7 to get the 57% ABV.

Since you are new to Scotch, even though this Springbank has other Springbank whiskies of different ages in it, it is still a single malt; because single malt means whisky from a SINGLE DISTILLERY. Although it has Springbanks up to 25-years-old, it is considered a 12 year old under British law. The same rule applies to single malts as it does to blended Scotches.

Keep these bottles and buy all you can get, but don't let the shop know what they have. Once in a while we all run across a gem. It's by luck. Enjoy!!

Thanks bkblankenship for the great info! Just an FYI for anyone who has an interest in this Springbank 12 year 100 proof - it was bottled in the early-mid 1990s.

I spent an afternoon with Gordon Wright who helped put the blend together for the Springbank 12yr 100 proof. There is whiskey in there MUCH older than 25yrs. Gordo admitted the folks at Springbank were a little annoyed at how much of the really really old stuff he used. Hence it was never made again. The newer 10yr 100 is not even a shell of the 12yr. We bought about 25K in 1995, people thought we were nuts. REALLY? I have one bottle left which will help put my daughter through college in 2023.

I just found a few of these in <STATE DELETED>!! I just opened one of them and it is amazing. I can not believe my luck, and to think I was eyeing a couple on whiskyauction.com and which are already over 250 Euros, you know something, it is that good that I might still try and bid on the ones on Whisky Auction!

The guy in charge of buying spirits for my local liquor store claims this to be one of his favorite scotches. It's needs a little filtered water to uncover some of its flavors and scents, or else the alcohol will obscure them. But try it both ways to see, it's a fun thing to do. I like 5 parts whiskey to one part filtered water, but some will say 4:1.
