I've been wanting to try Maker's 46 for awhile now, but your review makes it sound overly sweet.

Toffee, Vanilla and Honey + Smoothness seem to = Little Balance for my taste
It sounds desert like.

Your review is great, and I appreciate the straightforward honesty. Now you have me even more curious. Will this be a great smooth bourbon or another over the top sweet bourbon?

I find myself appreciating a little charred wood or bitters in my cocktail for balance. Maybe it's just a personal thing.

Great blog and writing!

You can always try Jefferson for a "caramelized vanilla sugar" profile + sublime balance. About ~$50 though :/.....

I am not a bourbon drinker at all as I find them all overly sweet for my palate and I don't like the "bourbony" aftertaste. I picked up the 46 months ago when it was released to try to expand my palate a bit. I also picked up a 50ml of regular Makers for the taste comparison. While I preferred the extra flavors present in the 46, I still found it too sweet. I guess I was hoping it would have a more complex structure. I haven't been back since August.
Maybe it's time to go back and give it another look now that it's had some time to relax.
Cheers.
