I splurged irresponsibly today on two single malts: a Talisker 10-year and a Strathisla 12-year. Unfortunately, to my taste, the Strathisla has a minty high-note, which I do not like, preferring a deeper, golden taste. The Talisker is much closer to my liking, with a great earthy nose, but it is still not Royal Lochnagar. The store had a special sale offer on the Glenlivet 18-year, and it looked golden and delicious in the bottle. Is it recommended?

If you are trying different single malts get Michael Jackson's "guide to single malt scotch" book at amazon.com . It's a great guide and he rates and describes any single malt out there . It's a great read too with lots of interesting info .

The Whisky Bible can be purchased through Amazon.com although I don't know if there are any restrictions in to Canada. Current version is the 2010 and was released atleast 4 or 5 months ago. Additionally, it can be ordered here : www.whiskybible.com For the US, Amazon is the least expensive over ordering directly from the UK due to the shipping costs.

I just received award-winning whisky expert Dave Broom's The World Atlas of Whisky - it's a beauty and so far, I am really enjoying it. Broom's new book is - and I quote here "...the only guide the connoisseur and newcomer will ever need in order to understand everything there is to know about the world of whisky."
I also have Michael Jackson's Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch and it's definitely a great source which I refer to often. Broom's new book is much larger and has more detailed information on over 150 distilleries and more than 350 expressions tasted. Beautiful illustrations and a wealth of information for all.

Thanks Jojo , Amazon.ca has it listed as available about mid October .
I'm sure your job must have a few perks like early previews of certain books

I do too have JM Whisky Bible. Good reference!
By the way... Talisker 10 is a very balanced whisky (my opinion) - Like it very much! About Glenlivet 18 yo, I took it when I was a bit drunk... But I remember it more like the 12yo than 15yo French Oak. Theus |
