I have an old bottle of blended scotch that appears to be from around 1890 by special appointment to H M the King. This seems to me to be about the time this company was in its infancy and i wonder if this bottle has any value to collectors

We can have your bottle of Black & White dated, but need photos (you'll need to register). What you're seeing on the label is an indication of what time period the bottle is from - and by mention of "By Special Appointment to H M the King" tells me it could very well be an old bottle. We can find out for sure with photos.

There is not a lot left of the label .. it had been in my grand parents basement for over 50 years when I found it about 40 years ago so it is at least 90 years old. Silverfish had been dining on the label until I cleaned it and put it away in the cupboard. It has a cap with a fold down tightening system fashioned from wire. I will see if I can get some photos taken but the only area where the print is intact is at the base of the neck where reference is made to HM the King.

It is highly unlikely that it is from the 1890s as Queen Victoria was the monarch at the time, not a king. Victoria reigned from 20 June 1837 to 22 January 1901; after which her son Edward VII inherited the throne. The original Black and White did not display the Scottie and West Highland Terriers on the label. The terriers came later. The original bottle got its name as Black and White because the bottle was black and the label was white. People readily recognized it because of these two distinctions. A picture and any numbers on the bottle would have to be supplied to determine the age. But it is definitely not from the 1890s. It would have to be after 1901 at the earliest as Buchanan wasn't born until 1849 and there was no king from 1837 through 1901.

Thanks for pointing that out ... I hadn't thought about checking when the Kings ruled. I have just got used to Queen Elizabeth II being in power for so long I was beginning to believe that it was forever. I took some photos of the bottle, but they are just cell phone photos, and you can see them at http://qualityproductinformation.com
