I was just given an old bottle of JW Extra Special. The only label on the bottle is a gold diamond shape that says: "distilled and bottled in Scotland under British Government Supervision". The cap is gold with black lettering. It says on the top Extra Special, the side of the cap says Built in Pourer and John Walker & Sons Limited.
It is a very large bottle 13.5 inches tall and 3.75 inches across. The bottle is mounted inside a black wood and metal tilt pourer. The bottom of the bottle says "liquor bottle" the code Z 960, the word Scotland and a symbol with the letters UG. Any thoughts to how old this is or if it's still drinkable. There is some sediment, but otherwise looks good. Thanks for any info you can provide. NJJohnnieFan |

We can likely have this bottle dated, but as always we need photos. Be sure to include the closure.

This sounds like it could possibly be a gallon [or half gallon] bottle that's used for home bars, it also appears that the main label has disappeared at some time in the past.
As long as the seal on the bottle is still intact and not broken then it should be fine to drink as the sediment may just be cold floc that's settled on the bottom. Just be careful as it could also be a dummy" bottle used for display and in that case it's not whisky in it. Without the main label the bottle has no real value and you should try the liquor although you may find someone out there who'll want to buy the stand and, if it's whisky, enjoy it as the cold floc won't cause any harm. Hi,
Just found this post as I'm trying to research an empty bottle of Walker's Kilmarnock Whisky (marked Dummy Coloured Water) that I dug from my garden. I'm thinking that the 'UG' on your bottle might indicate that it was produced by one of the United Glass Bottle Works. There was one in Shettleston,Glasgow;Portobello,Edinburgh and-closer to where I live in Dunblane- in Alloa and Bridge of Allan. And there may have been more? The works in Glasgow (closest to Walker's in Kilmarnock) closed down in 1982. Hope this info is of some use to you? |
