Gilbeys Spey-Royal Scotch Whisky '20s?

Hello everyone!

Lance here, living in upstate NY and a huge whisky fan.

Recently, with all the flooding we have had my family had their entire basement flooded.

So I went over to help them clean and found a old bottle of Scotch Whisky, I will attach some pictures of it.

On the bottle it says

"Federal Law Forbids Sale Or Re Use Of This Bottle"

and there is a tax stamp "U S Internal Revenue Tax Stamp"

on the bottom, it says " W & A Gilbey" "London England" and there is "22" along with some other that I cannot make out.

I know nothing about this, so any information anycould provide will be greatly appreciated. If better pics are needed, just let me know and I will snap some more.

The Sticker you see in the last picture says "By Appointment Whicky Distillers to H. M. The King. W & A Gibey Ltd"

Also, I have the original bag that this bottle came in, it is red with black strips (almost a checker pattern) and has the company name on the draw strings of the bag

Hi there! Thanks for the photos of your Gilbey's Spey-Royal. We will see if we can have it dated for you.

I don't have much information in regard to Spey-Royal in particular, however, Glen Spey contributes to the Spey-Royal blend. W & A Gilbey Ltd., of London purchased the "Glen Spey-Glenlivet Distillery" in 1887 (along with Strathmill and Knockando distilleries.) Glen Spey is a key contributor to J&B Rare (the most popular Scotch whisky in Europe and the number two Scotch in the world). Also, just to note, today the Glen Spey distillery is part of Diageo plc.

Thanks for getting back to me Jo-Jo, if we could get it dated that would be amazing. Am dying to knw more about it, it just sits here staring at me lol. I am also curious as to what something like this is worth?

Hey there! We just received this information.... (you will also receive a copy sent to you personally). Your bottle image of Gilbey’s Spey Royal was forwarded to the Diageo Archives. Going by the royal warrant (by appointment to H M The King) and the design of the packaging, it is thought your bottle is likely dated from the early 1950s. Diageo does not have an example of your bottle in their archives, therefore made it difficult for them to give you a more precise date.

Spey Royal was launched by W&A Gilbey in the early 1890s and contained Glen Spey malt whisky. W&A Gilbey purchased Glen Spey distillery in 1887.
