DUFFTOWN-GLENLIVET 8 Years, Who Knows the Real Age?

Hi guys,

I got this whiskey from my grandmother to my birthday . She told me that the bottle is older than me, but she dont know how old. This was my 30 birthday ;-). Can anyone tell me how old this bottle is???

We have bottles the same as your 8 YO Dufftown Glenlivet in our historic bottle collection which are dated c.1980s, however you will be pleased to hear that I have found evidence of this bottle being marketed as early as 1978. This particular bottle continuted to be maketed into the 80s and I have found examples as late as 1985, so from the evidence I have, your bottle will have been purchased sometime between 1978 and 1985. Therefore it could well be 30 years old.I hope this information is of help.

You're welcome! One last thing to mention, once bottled, whisky should be ok for 10-15 years - and keep in mind it's considered "ideal" to keep it stored upright (you don't want it to come in contact with the cork) in a cool, dark spot and away from sunlight. There are many different opinions on how long the taste of the whisky will go unchanged. So if you decide to drink your Scotch, nose it and decide from there. It will likely be fine, but there's always that possibility the taste may have changed a bit throughout the years. Another option you have is to keep it in tact for as long as possible as an investment, or in your situation, keep it as as a reminder of a great gift from grandma!

sorry to interfere, but i just bought one of those bottles and would like to ask where the bottle-number is mentioned? is it possible to see the number without opening the can? am i right that the 'Comp. No' 5142 has nothing to do with it and is no sign of identity?
because the one i bought should still be sealed... just to know if the description was right.

another question: i couldn't actually find the 8y old one with 43% anywhere - does it mean that it's such a rare version or just a mistake or ... because i'd really like to know the bottle's real 'price' a propos making an investment.

The number your referring to appears on the bottom left side of the label on the back of the bottle only. This kind of number appears on all Bell's whiskies from this period and it's our understanding it's not thought to be a bottle number i.e. No. 1 or 1000 bottles, because this kind of numbering is usually only assigned to limited edition bottlings, and the Dufftown Glenlivet 8 YO wasn't a limited edition. Additionally, it appears on the back label under the barcode and usually a bottle number denoting a limited bottling will have good visibility on the front label. Unfortunately, there's isn't a record of what these numbers refer to, but we do know it's definitely not a bottle number in that sense.

The 'Comp No.' doesn't give any information about the whisky or the bottle, this is a duty free identifier. We've been told there have been bottles of 8 YO that are 43% - so we know that's not an error or mistake. There isn't a comprehensive record of which strengths were being produced exactly when and where, but it's likely that it's 43% rather than 40% because it's a duty free bottle and that (43%) is an export strength version.
