Hi I’m new to this forum and in need of help. I’m to open a B&B and bar in Montevideo Uruguay. Uruguay being very much a whisky drinking country but not of the malt sort. My idea is to bring 100 single malts and at the same time do tasting and courses. My knowledge is limited and I would need to learn myself first. So what I would need with your help, is first a list of 100 single malts, where to buy them and preferably from same exporter, and then where to do an intensive course in learning Whiskey tasting.

Do a little research and find out some of the malts used in the blends you'll have in your bar. An easy way to get people into the malts is to give them something that is in the blends they drink. My guess is you'll have a hard time getting everything from one supplier. But you do want to cover Scotland (Lowlands, Highlands, Speyside, Islands and Islay). As importantly, your selection should include a strong representation of expressions from independent bottlers. If you ever go into the great whisky bars in Scotland, about 50-60% of the expressions will be from independent bottlers. Moreover, most buyers and owners of retail stores and restaurants (here in the U.S.) are clueless to this. You can make yourself a destination if you build a competent selection and not just having a lot of official bottlings; train yourself and your staff about the selections as the education will translate to profit and loyal customers because your competition likely doesn't have it.
If you'd like more help on this regard, contact me. A couple good places to start are scotchwhisky.net and read Dave Broom's "The World Atlas of Whisky" or Michael Jackson's "Whisky The Definitive World Guide." |
