Rum In Johnnie Walker Bottle

Hello all,

I have recently acquired a bottle of frigate rum which has been bottled in a johnnie walker bottle. It says on the front of the bottle that it was bottled in sydney. I was just wondering about the history of it and maybe a value. I've spent ages trying to google some info about it but have come up with nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will try to attach photos but computers arent my thing.

I would doubt that it's been bottled in a JW bottle and, unless JW is branded on the glass, then it's most likely a standard square bottle that quite a few brands use in which case have it with Coke

I agree with blenderm. I have seen the picture of the bottle. It is a Johnnie Walker style bottle, but is not a Johnnie Walker bottle. The Frigate Rum bottle's shoulders are not as broad as the Johnnie Walker bottle. The shoulders of the Frigate Rum bottle are more tapered. As blenderm stated, there are quite a few brands who use the square bottle "style". Don't get your hopes up; Frigate Rum is not rare. It currently sells for $56.07 Australian.

on the back of the bottle it has 'Johnnie walker' written in glass and underneath that it has 'This bottle always remains the property of johnnie walker & sons Ltd.'
It also has on the front label 'Bottled by John Walker & sons Ltd Sydney'

Please try this first:

To post photos, please register first. Once done, go the appropriate category and click on New Thread or Post Reply. In the body part of the thread - please list as much info as possible. Then, when you're ready to insert your photo, look for the paper clip icon (to the right of the smiley face). Click on it - a new window will open which gives you the option to browse your computer for your photo. Once you do that and Upload - close that window. If your photo does not attach, that means it's too big, so re-size and try again. Once you're set and have closed out of that window, you'll be back to the main page with your question. Click on the paper clip icon again and it might say Insert Attachments" or it may just show numbers - go ahead and either click on Insert Attachments or just click on the numbers and it will insert into your message. You won't actually see the photo until you either preview it (look to bottom of the body of your thread, below the icons and you'll see a button to either Submit New Thread or to Preview Post. Once you click on either of these, you will see your photos.

Your bottle is not johnnie walker scotch or any relation, contrary to the markings that indicate this is just a coincidental name.
It is a united distillers rum sydney brand. Could be worth the $50 if you wanted to have a shot on eBay. Otherwise I will buy it.

If, as you say, the bottle states that it's JW's then I wouldn't touch it. It's been quite common in Thailand, Vietnam India etc for bottles to be reused and filled with local hooch with no guarantee of it being drinkable yet alone non poisonous
Every year there are newspaper reports about major problems with people drinking local hooch thinking it's legit.
If the bottle's plain with no mention of JW then I would say that it's legit Frigate rum otherwise leave well alone.

Like all distillers John Walker & Sons dabbled in the full range of products, not just the Scotch Whisky that we are so familiar with. Walker's sold brandy, port, wine and rum in the past and a lot of these products were bottled in Australia for that market. Frigate Rum is one of these products and by looking at the design of your bottle, it could date back to the 1940s. I have come across a few of these bottles over the years but not a huge amount so they are quite collectable.

If we'd managed to see the photo's we could have answered your question a lot better. JW like a number of other major BLENDED Scotch Whisky companies all bottled and exported other spirit products in the UK and other "Commonwealth" countries from the late 1800's through to WW2 when this busines basically stopped. The reason, the UK government made them concentrate on exporting only whisky, to bring down the cost of the US war loans, and importing only very small volumes of other spirits during war time and after the war they didn't really start again apart from gin

I think your problem is that you have to register. It takes about 60 seconds. No one will know your email address and you can make up a name.

If Christine from Diageo thinks these type of bottles are quite collectable - then you may want to contact companies such as McTears.com or Bonhams.com - both specialize in valuations. If you choose this route, please keep us posted.
