In the spirit (no pun intended) of the holidays, I suggest you simply give this to me as a random act of kindness and reap the benefits of your subsequent good karma.

this bottle was puchase by my friend in scotland late 70;s early 80's alnog with the earlyer sequiential bottles which were open long ago or passed on to friends.
this one is the last he owns. i would be willing to do what ever is necessarry to authenticate and verify what this is and an actual value. this is not a scam and nobody is looking to get rich unless this is a valuable bottle. thats why i signed up for this forum. im hoping at worst to find out accurate info and at best sell it. i have the ability to get to anywhere frontier airlines flys at no cost there fore hand delivering this we dont have to trust this to the samsonite apes. SO COME ON FOLKS! help me out if its crap tell me so i can pass this on if its worth a fortune then tell my how to sell it. |

I have no idea, but I'd wager there aren't very many people who would buy an OPENED bottle. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong; but I wouldn't expect much of a market.
The bottle pictured is not filled to the top, but the foil possibly appears to be intact (can't quite tell if its been broken but left in place). Can you answer that question? Is it opened or sealed? Last edited by jwise; 12-28-2010 at 03:50 PM. |

Looking at the fill height and if the bottle was not opened I think it is still worth around 3000 UK pounds. Perhaps around 2800-3000.

This appears to be the same whisky bottle, but filled to the proper level. Makes me think your bottle has been opened.
Google is your friend. These guys are selling a bottle for 3,900 pounds. There are 70cl bottles that are "1938 35yr Rare & Fine" and "1938 31yr Rare & Fine" for closer to 10,000 pounds. These don't appear to be the same as what you have, as your bottle is 75cl. THESE GUYS also seem to have your same bottle for sale. They have it listed for 3,500 pounds. The image they have shows a bottle filled to the proper level. If your bottle IS sealed, then the cork must have been damaged, allowing some of the liquid to escape or evaporate. SO, if you had a pristine bottle, and sent it up for auction, I would assume you could fetch 80-90% of the retail store price. This would include auction fees. If you sold it privately, you could assume to fetch 60-70% of the retail store price. Because your bottle is not full, it is indicative that the seal has been broken, and the cork is damaged. I would fear the alcohol has all but evaporated out of the bottle. I would pay exactly nothing for the bottle. If, the seal is still good, but your friend has opened the bottle and tasted a little, then the authenticity of the bottle is compromised. It could have been refilled with Cutty Sark for all I know. I would pay exactly nothing for the bottle. However, if you can find someone who has TASTED that same bottle (and presumably loves it), and would be willing to buy the opened bottle after tasting it to confirm its authenticity, you could sell it to that person for drinking purposes, and not as an investment. This would fetch a far cry from 3,500 pounds. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you seemed to be very persistent about getting SOME information. seems i have been demoted to "guest" and cannot log in but i would like to thank everyone for the help. i think i have a clear understanding as to what this is. i looked at the bottle again and im thinking that the cork is damaged as i can see that while the outer seal is in tack there are signs of seepage. as stated earlier i have no clue so i rely on the comunity for my education.
this experience was really interesting and i "raise a toast of the finest" to you all! im going to explain to my friend that the lack of care has rendered this bottle "near worthless" but should any one wish to pursue this please feel free to contact me and i will put you in touch with him directly. once again thank you all, scotty |

My IP got blocked, so I think they might have been having some technical difficulty or something. Sorry about that.
As to the value, it could still be worth quite a bit, but just not to me. I don't know how to find out, unfortunately. Good luck with it, and it really is too bad the bottle was not kept in better condition. £3,500 is a lot of money to have lost to a dry climate. |

Good evening all,
I'd like to thank you all for the information on the 1938 McCallan as it has averted what could have been a family drama. I've just helped my girlfriend move house and to celebrate, her mother presented us with a boxed 1938 McCallan which she bought in Harrods in 1980. It had been intended as a Christmas present for the bank manager, but somehow got mislaid and was only found recently. She was urging us very strongly to open it, but we resisted until it could be Googled. I'm glad we did. It is almost identical to the photo posted by 88shelby, being 75cl & 43%, but this was bottled by Atkinson Baldwin, 46 Glasshouse Street, London. It is No. 531. One other difference is that it is completely full. It does seem astounding that it should be worth more than £3,000. Considering that the bottle was bought for around £40 originally. We know it's origin & history, but does the screw top & different bottler affect the value? All advice gratefully received. Niall |
