Lightbulb Urgent Help Please!!! Tennesee Whiskeys

hi,
I'm an Aussie doing a TAFE course, and we are currently studying alcohol, specifically Tennessee whiskeys.

My assignment states that there are three different brands of Tennessee whiskey which I must identify, but all the info I have been able to gather says that there are only two (Jack Daniels and George Dickels).

Can anyone help me find the third please?

Question Tennessee Whiskey brands

Sorry man! I only know of George Dickel's & Jack Daniel's! But, now I'm really curious - let me know the third Tennessee brand when you eventually find out!

The third one is "Gentleman Jack".. Although it is from the makers of "Jack Daniels", it still is a stand alone brand. And a good one too.

Exclamation Prichard's Distillery in Tennessee

Prichard's Distillery is in Tennessee - about 100 miles south of Nashville (near the TN / AL border) in the small town of Kelso. They produce rum here (yes, I said RUM!) - no whisky or bourbon.

Default Pritchard's Double Barreled Bourbon

This has been produced in limited quantities - I have a bottle on the table as I write this. Cannot vouch for the quality (as yet)

Default Prichard's Double Barrel Bourbon

Here's the scoop on Prichard's Double Barrel Bourbon - This distillery actually purchased about 4000 gallons of the bourbon 3 or 4 years ago. At the time of purchase, it was 125 proof. The distillery rebarreled it in charred oak barrels and aged it again which not only lowered the proof to 90, it restored and enhanced the natural flavors.

If you look very closely to the label, you'll see it states the bourbon was made in Kentucky.

Not much of Prichard's Double Barrel Bourbon is left.....Good luck!

Smile Sweet Lucy

Pritchards Distillery also makes what they call Sweet Lucy. It is a bourbon based liqueur. It has a very smooth taste, similiar to Southern Comfort. This is produced exclusively by Pritchards.

Default Pritchards

Terribly sorry to hear that there's a limited quantity of the Pritchards. I just tasted it as part of the American Pride flight at The Brandy Library in Manhattan and it blew me away. I'm a fan of bourbons and American whiskeys, but have recently concluded that they come on very strong compared with Irish whiskeys and Scotch whisky. The Pritchards had depth and lots of subtlety. I'm going to have to order some before it's all gone!!

Default There are only 2 whisky brands

Sorry to let you down but there are only 2 brands in Tennessee not 3. Besides all but 3 counties are still dry. That doesn't leave much room for new brands. Gentlemen Jack is still part of Jack Daniels. The single barrel from Jack Daniels is absolutely amazing and is a must try! Cheers!!

Default Pritchard's Spirits

Pritchard's Double Barreled Bourbon is a fantastic product and still available. Their Rums are excellent too. For the individual searching for the 3rd Tennessee Whiskey, I understand Pritchard's will soon introduce their own Tennessee Whiskey.

Default The other TN Whiskey

It's Lem Motlow’s - made at JD until maybe as late as the 80s.

Different from JD - not just a new expression.

FYI: Dickel was made in KY for years... but still called a TN Whisky.

Pritchard's is distilled in KY, but bottled and labeled as TN.

Tennessee changed the law that limited the geographic area distillerys can locate a few years ago. There are a few new ones.

The Tennessee Distilling Company is producing Collier and McKeel Tennessee Whiskey in Nashville. It is not released yet.

Default Prichard's TN Whiskey

It does exist! The first TN whiskey to be produced in 60+ years! Just out about a month ago. May be hard to find in some areas, but TN whiskey is re-born!

Default Prichards' DOES have a new TN Whiskey

It's a new product from Prichards' and is not the same as the double barrell bourbon (which is made in KY). This is only TN's third whiskey to be produced in the state thanks to recent changes in the laws. It is now available in retail stores in TN...
Red Dog Wine & Spirits in Franklin, TN (www.reddogwineandspirits.com) carries it. The product is not yet on Prichards' website but it is out there, I promise!

Default Pritchards

I was just down in the Nashville/Shelbyville area and picked up a bottle of the Pritchards Tennessee Whiskey. Good, smooth stuff - and very much like Jack Daniels.

I am not sure if it is charcoal mellowed - according to JD, to be called Tennessee Whiskey, your whiskey has to be charcoal mellowed.

Try this - it is good whiskey.

Hey mqqn,

Any chance you can do a taste test with the Pritchard's, JD, and
George Dickel and let us know your thoughts?

I asked about Prichard's TN Whiskey on a bourbon forum and received a reply
from Chuck Cowdery who stated:

"So what makes it "Tennessee Whiskey"? As far as the labeling rules go, it has
to be whiskey made in Tennessee. Whiskey is a controlled term and when a
place-of-origin is included it has to be true. That's probably why they went to
such lengths on the label to show that they 'made' the product in Tennessee,
even though it wasn't distilled there.

The whole charcoal mellowing 'Lincoln County process' is what distinguishes
Tennessee whiskey as most people understand it, but there's nothing about
charcoal mellowing in the Standards of Identity or TTB rules. Legally,
Tennessee whiskey is just whiskey made in Tennessee, and even 'made'
appears to be subject to interpretation."

Even so, I'd still like to try it!

Wow! Does anyone else know of this Tennessee whiskey? The Collier and McKeel distillery is about a mile from the heart of Nashville! Interesting.

Default Prichard's Tennessee Whiskey

The Prichard's Tennessee Whiskey is made in Kelso, Tennessee in an old Scottish-type Pot Still and aged in New Charred Oak Barrels. The barrels that are used are small 15 gallon sized and heavy char white oak. They give the color and flavor to the whiskey a little faster than the typical 60 gallon barrels used in Kentucky. Since it is "Straight Whiskey" it is aged at least two years in barrel per rules in the USA. Prichard's ages his about 4 years or "when it's ready", as he says.
While there are no specific rules for making Tennessee Whiskey other than produced in Tennessee, the unwritten rule is that it is made using a similar method as Bourbon, which is the most regulated whiskey in America as whiskey making rules go. Prichard's uses Tennessee White Corn, milled at the old stone mill across the highway from their tiny distillery in an old Kelso, Tennessee schoolhouse. (This old mill is an historic site and uses the origional granite stones.) While Phil Prichard will not reveal his Mash Bill (no distiller will), the whiskey is made up of over 60% White Corn, a little rye, and whatever Phil is not saying. The water, which is very important as it must be Iron-free, comes from the same source as Jack Daniels, only about 30 miles sooner. There is no charcoal filtering of the whiskey as Phil feels that this takes away certain essential oils which aid in the taste of the whiskey. (JD's charcoal process is unique to them but NOT required by Law)
He also produces a Lincoln County Lightning which is a 'White-Dog' product from essentially the same recipe as the Tennessee Whiskey. If you try it you will find a strong "sweet corn" nose and mid-pallet that is extremely smooth for a product like this. Compare it to some of the White-Dog from other distillers and you can immediately taste the difference in the quality of the Lincoln County Lightning.
For all of those skeptics out there, Tennessee Whiskey from Prichard's is as good as the JD Single Barrel in my opinion. I am sure that there are "loyalist" who would like to take away from what he is doing and some of the big brands are nervous as well. Do yourself a favor and compare his Tennessee Whiskey to the other two guys and let the chips fall where they will. This is not a Scotch drinkers whiskey, but the Bourbon guys will get it!
