Question Wax

Hello, fellow Scotch lovers. I just opened my bottle of Aberlour a'bunadh and had a hell of a time getting the wax off the bottle. I've had this problem before with some old brandies. The little starter cut-out never seems to do much good and I'm always afraid of using a knife- I don't want to damage the top, muchless the cork. Any tricks out there? Thanks!
