some thoughts on springbank 10
so, i recently popped the cork on a bottle of springbank 10. to put this in context, i bought myself 5 bottles for my birthday in late may. so far, i have finished a bottle of glenfarclas 105, a 35 cl bottle of the macallan 12 (a present from a very generous and understanding neighbor), and most of a bottle of highland park 12. the glenfarclas didn't do much for me; the macallan 12 was a little better than expected, but still not up my alley; and the highland park 12 had some nice things going on but has felt a bit too "small" in scale and overall impression. enter springbank 10. hereafter, some random notes:
pleasant and intriguing on the nose (actually brought to mind my beloved laphroaig quarter cask!)...
a bit of talisker pepper kick in the mouth...
a hint of butterscotch remaining in the empty glass...
i enjoyed springbank 10, even more than the HP 12... or the talisker, for that matter...
a healthy dose of peat on the initial nose, noticeable smoke in the last drop!
sitting a while, empty glass approaches quarter cask scent: surely a good sign!
i suppose i would like it more with a longer finish: it seems to vanish from the mouth at the end... although this may speak to the expression's smoothness...
i have a feeling that i might like (the more heavily peated) longrow (cv?)...
so, there you have it: first impressions of springbank 10, a SMSW that drinks "big" and has piqued my interest in campbeltown and its traditions...
