Whisky for Beginner
Hi folks, I recently decided to try some whisky for the first time. Naturally I'm starting cheap until I know I like it. I tried some Whyte and MacKay with Pepsi Max. I actually enjoyed this. Then I tried some Old Samuel and it was horrible, all I could taste is the oak. I get that these are aged in oak casks but I was hoping it would be a little less oaky tasting. I guess some people like that. I also had this same problem with brandy and rum when I tried them, I just can't get a grip on the extreme wood taste.
Rather then bail out I thought I'd ask for some advice for some nice whisky not tasting too oaky.
I'm in the UK and don't really want to spend more then £15 at first for a bottle. I'm heading to a ASDA in a couple days. I'm not really sure how geographical this community is so I've listed the whiskys that are in my price / store. I totally get these will be "cheap crap" to veterans, but hopefully you can help out.
Grant's Scotch (/ Blended Scotch / Ale Cask Reserve Scotch / Sherry Cask Reserve Scotch)
Famous Grouse Scotch
Jameson Irish Wiskey
Chivas Regal Blended Scotch
Highland Pride Scotch
Glenfiddich 12 Year Old Malt
Isle of Jura Single Malt
For now I'll mix with Pepsi Max but still try a bit straight until I figure if whisky is for me or not.
