I am planning a Single Malt Scotch tasting event which will be attended by novices (including myself). I have all regions represented. I'm wondering what would be the most logical order in which to taste them. I was thinking of ending with the Islays since they have the most smoke/peat flavor, but I'd like the opinion of someone more knowlegable than I. In what order would you taste Lowland, Highland, Speyside, Island, Campbeltown, and Islay?

The most important factor is to hold all peaty scotches for the last. Start with the soft ones and work up to the smokey scotches and then the peaty ones. Every tasting event I have been to tries the basic scotches before ones with a finish. If you have an interest in having someone conduct your tasting, let me know.

If all are newcomers to the wonderful world of scotch - then I would break this tasting into two parts. Do all your Lowlands, Campbeltowns, Highlands and Speysides at one sitting and then introduce the Islay’s and Islands next. All regions at one sitting maybe too much for some people. Just my 2 cents worth! -M

I suggest for novices, never attempt ALL regions in one evening; and definitely graduate to the ISLAYS over time; not that evening. Four malts for a first event is a good start. Purchase 70% plus Cacao chocolate to cleanse the pallet between expressions. If anyone would like more info on conducting tastings, please feel free to call or email me. I will be glad to give you FREE consultation. Visit my website for the email address and / or telephone number.
