Old Prints

Hi
First time on any forum but here goes.
I have six mounted prints of dogs on the bottom of the mount's is printed, From the original painting the property of JAMES BUCHANAN & CO LTD, SCOTCH WHISKY DISTILLERS. I have had them for over thirty years and got them from an antique shop. Has anyone any ideas or info please.Thank you

Have found out that these prints were also on the back of a set of playing cards given out by Black & White but don't no the year, hope this helps.

Curious find you have there...I actually recognized a couple of them!

James Buchanan, the whisky maker, had a passion for among other things
hunting dogs and was known for collecting portraits of dogs by various artists.

In the early part of the 1910 ads for Buchanan's Black & White, you can find
many examples of the dog portraits he acquired (usually of single dogs), and
this continued into the 1920's with portraits for pairs of dogs.

Begining about 1930 Buchanan's began making regular offerings of prints for
some of these collected portraits to buyers of the company's whisky brands
(see attached photo).

To the Right are "Two Cairn Terriers" (above), and "Two Wire-haired Fox Terriers".
In the center are "Scottish Deer Hounds" (above), and "Great Danes" (below)....
from the 1930-spring offering.
To the Left are "A pair of black cocker spaniels" (above) and "A pair of English
setters" (below).

All 6 of these are prints of works done in chalk by Arthur Wardle (1864-1949)
The originals to which were sold at Christie's London Auction House in May 2004.

These prints should date from 1929-1933, after which time Buchanans had settled
on using Black & White Terriers as 'mascots' to be used in all Black&White brand ads.

Thank you for your information about the prints.
How things have changed three old pence in stamps got you a mounted colour print and you didn't even have to buy a bottle of whisky!!!
Your copy of an advertisement puts the Great Danes print at March 1930, (one down five to go) will have to try and find the others from other advertisement's from those years.
1929 to 1933 make's them at least 79 years old which answer's my question so thank you again Walter and Whisky.com
