Default 24 Year Old Douglas Laing

I have recently come across a bottle of whisky from my Grandfathers selection that I know absolutely nothing about. It is a Douglas Laing Port Ellen Premier Barrel 24 Year Old Single Malt Whisky 700ml. Is anyone able to advise me if this was a good bottle and how much a bottle like this would cost to buy ??
If anyone could help me I would be very grateful.

Smile Douglas Laing Port Ellen Premier Barrel 24 Year Old Single Malt Whisky

We did a bit of research for you and found out directly from Douglas Laing that your particular Port Ellen 24 was a bottling in Premier Barrel livery specifically for NATEX...the NATO air-base in Germany. It was arranged through Douglas Laing's German Duty Free agent and sold well -- as Port Ellen is always an eye and palate catcher.

We've been told a retail price on the base of about GBP 120 per decanter - although this cannot be exactly sure as different shops work on different margins which of course may fluctuate the value a bit.

If you'd like an evaluation, we suggest you contact Martin at Mctear's - his email is: martin.green (AT) mctears.co.uk. Be sure to have excellent photos of your bottle to send him.

Hope this helps!

Thumbs down Douglas Laing 24 Year Old

Jojo,

Thankyou for replying. This does make sense as I have family that served in the forces recently in Germany. Made specifically for a NATO air base has taken away some of the glamorous thoughts of it being a "classic". In your experience would you believe that this is worth keeping as a collectors item as im not experienced in these one off's however desirable it may be. Or do you think it is worth selling.

Kind Regards

Wink Big decision to make!

Ads -

If you want a better idea of what it's worth, contact Martin at McTear's. A few things to keep in mind if you want to sell it - do you know how it was stored all these years? Ideal storage includes keeping it out and away from sunlight, avoiding extremes of temperatures (cellar-like temps are ideal) and the Scotch should not have been in contact with the cork.

The decision is yours - I would likely have it appraised and go from there. But, if I couldn't account for how it was stored all these years, it may be something I would keep in memory of my grandfather and think of it as a reminder of all the great times we had together!

Whatever you decide - good luck!
