Default 40 Year Old Whisky Recommendations

Can anyone recommend a good quality 40 year old whisky from 1972? My brother is turning 40 next year and I'd like to get him a special bottle for his birthday. I've seen some that go up into the £1000's, but unfortunately that's a tad beyond budget - I'm looking to spend maybe up to £300.

Thanks for your help!

One problem you're going to have is that a 40 yr from 1972 hasn't been released yet. You need something released in 2012. I don't know who's putting out a new 40 yr old in 2012.
You can get a 39 yr old BenRiach distilled in 1972 though. It's about $500.
If you want something cheaper, get something distilled in 1972 but not 40 yrs old. Tobermory 32 yr old from 1972 (bottled in 2005) should be around $300.
Good luck.
I turn 40 in 1972 as well and was thinking about getting a 40 yr old, a 30 yr from 2002, 20 from 1992, etc. and opening them all at a big 50th birthday party, with a 50yr old perhaps. I've started the research. I think I'll have better luck if I just get something from each decade, all distilled in 1972 of course! It will be expensive, but you only live once.

Hi Brian,

Thanks so much for that info! You can probably tell that I know very little about whisky, but the $300 option sounds feasible.

And I agree - we only have one life to live...may as well enjoy it! Good luck with your search! :-)

If you're in the UK you can buy a 40yo from ALDI [a German supermarket chain] for around $60. Don't know how good or not it is

Here's and option for you: www.gordonandmacphail.com Goto their online shop and seek out their personalized labels. You can get bottles at many different ages, 40 being one of them, and they'll personalize the label. So you can have something like, 'Bottled exclusively for ... on his 40th birthday...'

If you don't know G&M, they are one of the premier independent bottlers of malt whisky, and have been since they started their whisky program in 1896. IMHO, they are the best of them (though there are others I like too).

Anyway, their 40 year personalized bottle is listed at GBP 138.50
