Hi,
So, next summer Im lucky enough to be marrying the worlds biggest whisky fan. As a wedding present Im commissioning a drinks cabinet to house his extensive whisky collection. Do you lovely people have any ideas what would make the perfect whisky cabinet? One idea Ive had, for example, is to incorporate a small freezer to keep the ice in. I also understand whisky should be stored upwards (as opposed to lying down), so it will have to be tall enough to take the bottles. Any other ideas out there? Another idea I have had is to use whisky crates (with brand names on) to make part of the cabinet. Ive seen this done with old wine crates and it looks really neat. But, Im struggling to know where to get wooden whisky crates from, has anyone got any ideas? If it helps, I live in England. Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it! Mrs Whiskey |

A great idea but I doubt that you can pick up wooden crates as they were last used in the 70's. It's possible that there may be some on eBay but I doubt that they will be in GB.
Your idea about them standing upright is correct but if that much of a "fanatic" it's most likely that he won't use ice. A possible idea would be to segregate the bottles by blend and malt and then subdivide the malts into their regions -Speyside. Highland, Lowland, Islay and the Islands [possibly have a separate section for the Islands] and Campbletown. Whatever you do do not put bright lights in the cabinet as that will have a detrimental effect on the whiskies. I hope he appeciates the trouble you're going to for him |

It should be possible for a skilled carpenter to find a way to use genuine used whisky casks to make a cabinet. There are a few different ways you could do it. The casks come in different sizes depending on their original contents (bourbon, sherry, port pipes, etc.) I was actually thinking of commissioning a simple cabinet from a sherry cask.
Check out this designer- they may be able to do a one off for you. http://www.schoeppnerdesigns.com/Barrel_Furniture.html How many bottles are we talking here? There's a big difference between 30 and 200.

Well, Id like it to hold about 30 whisky bottles, and then have a wine rack and seperate space for some other spirits. I love the ideas on that link! I have a carpenter all set up, who has a range of reclaimed woods. I dont think he has old casks/crates, but I was hoping I could find a few somewhere to make a small part of it e.g. a counter. But it seems that crates are hard to find?
Thanks for the tips re light - I might well have included some otherwise! |
