I just saw that you wrote that you had tried Highland Park 15. I've never tried the 15, but it's reviews were not good, and it's been described as unbalanced and too sweet.
Give Highland Park 12 a try. It's not a sweet sherry bomb. Balanced honey, heather, and smoke. Most people like it. For a 12 yr old under $50 whisky it's hard to beat. I think it's finished in Bourbon barrels BTW. It shouldn't be too sweet and it has a pleasant drying finish. The 18 is even better, and smoother.
