off batch of Highland Park 18 ?
I have to start with an admission that I although I have been enjoying single malt scotches for years, I rarely discuss them or dont participate in tastings so am not very educated in describing scotch.
For the past 5 years or so, my main daily drink has been Highland Park 18 year. I have never had trouble obtaining a bottle and it has usually been around one hundred dollars per bottle. I have thoroughly enjoyed every sip and this scotch constantly gets compliments when I serve it to guests.
In the last couple of weeks all my local liquor stores have been out of stock and several of the managers have said that there is a nation wide out of stock that will likely precede a price increase when the supply resumes.
So, I decided to order ten bottles from Masters of Malt in the UK. I received them two days ago. I opened a bottle (bottle says UK on the back) and after one sip realized that this did not taste near as smooth as any of the previous bottles had. As a matter of fact, it was a bit harsh and not enjoyable.
I still had one bottle left from a local purchase last month and proceeded to do several blind tastings to compare the two, hoping the taste difference was my imagination. Unfortunately, I was able to identify the newer bottle 100% of the time.
I am considering cutting my losses and sending back the remaining 9 bottles, forfeiting around $300 for the round trip shipping.
I didnt realize that whiskey varied so much between batches. Is this common ?
I'm hoping that some experts can shed some light on my dilemma !
