i have to say that i DO find the caol ila to be a bit of a grower... i've experimented with letting my dram breathe a bit longer before lifting i to my nose and beyond... it DOES seem to have some effect. i realize, with this one, how important peat is to my level of enjoyment: letting the dram sit a bit seems to bring out a little more peat on the nose--and this correlates fairly strongly with my rising regard for the expression (albeit still well short of being knocked out). this one makes me want to try a wider array of islay's offerings--and to appreciate the "vive le difference" overall pleasures of the springbank experience (doesn't that sound like it should be the name of a band? want to start one?)... i WOULD recommend the springbank 10 pretty strongly: between the non-chill filtered and non-colored stance, the family line, and a richness to it, i think the expression has much to offer...
