and then to make things even more confusing for your average consumer, they can label whisky as "Scotch Whisky" no matter if it's Single Malt, Blended Malt or Blended Whisky (with grain), provided it's minimum age of 3 years and distilled, matured and bottled in Scotland.
So that nasty bottle of Clan McPiper which says "Scotch Whisky" is probably a 3 year old, grain heavy blend. Average Joe thinks that's what Scotch is.
....I still prefer the term "Vatted Malt" as it differentiates between that and a blend. But naturally the SMWA knows best....(yeah right)
